First time ever Steak House Soho becomes 5-star TUCC Restaurant

On April 20, for the first time in the history of the Club, the Connoisseurs visited the best steakhouse in Kyiv – The Soho Restaurant (82, Artema St.). They expected the evening to be good, but it turned out almost excellent and the family of 5-star TUCC restaurants now welcomes one more member!

The evening started as usual with aperitifs provided by our sponsors NAI Pickard and Pilsner Ukraine – cocktails gin and tonic and also a new Pago cocktail – Amaretto and Pago Peach, very soft and feminine taste which suggested a relaxing evening ahead. When the guests were seated they found out that their evening entertainment would be a live jazz quartet headed by Dimitry Alexandrov. The musicians played perfectly creating an atmosphere of the 1930’s sophisticated and luxury.

It became obvious from the start that the restaurant service was almost excellent and the waiters there are just a big family loving their job and treating patrons not like clients, but really like their dear guests. The service of the restaurant therefore got straight ‘5’. First dish – two types of tar-tars – salmon and beef were extremely tasty but French Riesling, 2003 that went well with the salmon, did not really compliment the beef, so some connoisseurs lowered their marks for that. However, second dish – tender veal fillet that was slightly grilled, vacuumed and then boiled was so tasty that Italian Valpolicella Classico of 2006 was not really even good enough with such a divine dish.

The restaurant’s chef Aleksey Cherny wanted to show the best of his masterpieces so the third dish was a grilled seebass fillet with warm octopus salad, olives and basilica salad served with Chilean Sauvignon 2006. After the fish Connoisseurs finally were served the kings of the evening – steaks. TUCC members were given a unique opportunity to try all three types of steaks available at the restaurant - American, Australian and Ukrainian. Almost unanimously the Australian steaks were voted the best, the most juicy and in fact as the restaurant showed to the guest the steaks before they were grilled – the Australian was the most marble of all. An Australian Cabernet of 2005 went perfectly with the meat.

Desert Improvisation (shaken halva with fresh berries, rum and honey caramel) was not a dish but a real picture on a plate and together with the French Tave 2004 was very well appraised by the connoisseurs. That was a rare occasion when the sommelier Eugene Kucheriavenko suggested with the desert a dry wine instead of sweet or semi-sweet.

Special thanks goes to the restaurant’s General Manager Natalia Nazarenko who was kind enough and in respect of a Ukrainian tradition suggested a very good lentil menu wich was greatly appreciated by those who were fasting for the Great Lent.

General mark of the restaurant was 4.8 which makes the Soho another 5-star restaurant of TUCC!

Connoisseurs recommend everybody visit Soho Restaurant especially to try their Australian steak!
